Engaging Secondary School Students in Economics through Experimental Methods
As part of the annual Shadowing of Teaching event at the NF VŠE, an exciting experiment unfolded within the Laboratory of Experimental Economics (LEE), captivating the minds of secondary school students. The event aimed to introduce young learners to the dynamic world of economics through hands-on experience and interactive engagement.
The centerpiece of the event was a game focusing on public goods, strategically designed to simulate real-world economic scenarios. The LEE was abuzz with enthusiastic students eager to immerse themselves in this intriguing experiment. Participants were presented with scenarios where they had to make decisions regarding the allocation of resources, highlighting the complexities inherent in collective decision-making and the concept of public goods.
Following the gameplay, a vibrant discussion ensued, as students eagerly exchanged insights and posed thought-provoking questions. Their keen interest and curiosity in experimental methods within economics were palpable, underscoring the effectiveness of such interactive learning experiences in fostering a deeper understanding of economic principles.
Dr. Vojtěch Kotrba, Director of the Laboratory of Experimental Economics, expressed delight at the overwhelming response from the students, emphasizing the importance of hands-on experimentation in complementing traditional classroom instruction. “Experiential learning not only enhances comprehension but also fosters critical thinking and analytical skills essential for navigating the complexities of the modern economic landscape,” remarked Dr. Kotrba.
The success of this event underscores the importance of initiatives that bridge the gap between theoretical concepts and practical application, paving the way for a new generation of informed and empowered economists.
